Become Certain of Everything

It will take you less than 5 minutes to do this!

Do you want to feel certain of everything?

No problem. I’ve got you covered with easy steps and recorded meditation that’s just 2 and a half minutes, easy peasy! And first, a little introduction:

There’s this idea we live by, mostly subconsciously, that things are certain… Well, it’s nothing more than that: An idea.

This idea is definitely useful up to a point.

A day starts, a day ends. The night begins, the night ends. We wake up and brush our teeth. We shower. When we buy food at a grocery store, the food we expect to find is there. When we drive somewhere the roads are where they were last time.

Most of the time, things are the way we are used to.

So we act accordingly.

That is OK. Just imagine how much time and energy would it cost to stress out about roads not being there, food not being there when it actually is there? Most of the time.

Right now, things are different than we are used to. It’s a sudden jolt to the system to find there is no more toilet paper and your favorite peanut butter has not been restocked at the grocery store. It’s just as jarring to have to adjust almost all daily routines because you suddenly need to restrict your movement to the bare necessities. I do hope you still brush your teeth.

Suddenly all the things that felt certain before no longer feel certain. In your daily life before Covid 19, you could relatively certain about the things that were certain and the things that weren’t certain. If the bus is late, you were already expecting it. When you left the house, you assumed you were safe and others were, too.

But now that stuff you were used to being certain no longer is certain, your mind spins off in various directions, wondering what else may have become uncertain.

Will the sun rise tomorrow? Who knows!

I cannot guarantee anything for certain and I hope you are weary of the people who do.

What I can offer is techniques on how to be with uncertainty and the stress we experience as a result of having to adjust many things, even if it is mainly our worldview. Because hey, some of you may already have been staying home most of the time.

Here’s what I like to do, and if you want, you can do it too…

  • Close your eyes.
  • Focus on your breath & only your breath.
  • Feel the certainty you have that you are indeed breathing.
  • Keeping your eyes closed, extend your awareness to everything else around you (this might take a bit of imagination).
  • Feel the certainty that nothing beyond your breath is certain.
